Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, Inc. - GPRS - of California was contacted by an electrical company to locate utilities in a proposed trenching path and rebar in an exterior building wall prior to core drilling. The purpose of the work was to run a new 4” conduit from an existing vault to the electrical room which was located in the basement of the building. We first scanned the proposed trenching path; among the findings were a Verizon duct bank, high voltage electrical, irrigation and a street lighting. We marked all findings with paint and flags to better identify the findings when the trenching would begin. We then scanned a 10’x10’ area on both sides of the exterior wall as the concrete thickness surpassed 20”. Finally, we were able to clear an area large enough where a 4” conduit would fit without damaging any rebar.
GPR is a great tool to scan areas of post tension cables, rebar, and conduits, including PVC pipes and can also be used to locate underground utilities prior to digging or excavating.
