Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, Inc. - GPRS - of Southern California was contacted by an electrical company in order to scan for reinforcing or conduits prior to anchoring. We were asked to scan (6) 7’x5’ areas prior to drilling up to 4” deep for new bollards that would be guarding the new electrical charging stations that were put in place. We found that the slab was approximately 8” thick and consisted of rebar at 16” on center; we found up to 6 conduits in one location up to 3”-3.5” deep. We marked all findings with chalk paint, we used yellow for rebar and orange for conduits. We also used Radio Detection to check for any potential live conduits in the areas. Due to the conduit findings in one of the locations, the customer had to make a minor adjustment to drill just outside the findings.
GPR scanning is a great tool to use for post tension cables, rebar, and conduits; it can also be used to scan for underground utilities prior to digging or excavating. GPRS has offices throughout the entire state of California and performs projects in cities like; Ventura, Santa Barbara, Thousand Oaks, San Luis Obispo, Bakersfield, Lancaster and the greater Los Angeles area.
