Concrete Scanning Prior to Coring - Downtown San Diego, CA

Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, Inc. - GPRS - of Southern California was contacted by a general contractor in order to scan for rebar, post tension cables, or conduits in a concrete deck prior to coring. GPRS scanned one area, approximately 2’X2’, and marked all findings directly on the surface with permanent marker. We found that the slab contained rebar, post tension cables, and conduits. Due to the inability of GPR to differentiate between rebar and post tension cables, the client was advised to chip down to the reinforcing marked to confirm its identity.

GPR scanning is a great tool to use to locate post tension cables, rebar, and conduits. It can also be used to scan for underground utilities prior to excavating or directional boring. GPRS has offices throughout the entire state of California and performs projects in cities such as; Murrieta, Menifee, Temecula, Escondido, Oceanside, El Cajon, La Mesa, El Centro, Palm Springs, San Diego, North County, Inland Empire, La Jolla, El Cajon, and San Clemente. The above photo shows the area scanned, with the layout of the reinforcing located marked with permanent marker. This slab was found to be approximately 7.5” thick with post tension cables, and rebar. GPRS was able to locate these items imbedded in the concrete, and accurately mark the locations to allow the general contractor to drill with confidence and keep unforeseen conditions from adding to the cost of the job.
